We have just completed our tally of the scores. Below are the four groups from each section that have made it to the final next Sunday, August 6th. Congratulations to all who have performed. There has been an amazing breadth of musicianship and pieces across all the groups.
The performance order has been generated using a random number generator.
Finalists are in performance order:
Jazz Combos:
Big Mak (Westlake Boys & Auckland Grammar) - 1 p.m.
Auckland Grammar Jazz Combo (Auckland Grammar School) - 1:20 p.m.
Avondale College Jazz Quintet (Avondale College) - 1:40 p.m.
Friggy Dom (King's College) - 2:00 p.m.
Big Bands:
Sancta Maria College Big Band - 2:40 p.m.
Rangitoto College Big Band - 3:00 p.m.
Auckland Grammar Big Band - 3:20 p.m.
King's College Little Big Band - 4:00 p.m.
Prizegiving - 4:20pm
The final will run from 1 to 5:15 p.m. Jazz Combos will perform from 1 to 2:20 p.m. There will be a short interval, and then Big Bands will perform from 2:40 to 4:00 p.m. Following the Big Band performances, the judge will deliberate, and then we will have an awards presentation. We invite you to select and perform your Best 3 tunes, with your total on-stage time no longer than 15 minutes. Special thanks to Kevin Field, who will be adjudicating for the top awards from your performance at the final. Please bring a copy of your scores for Kevin to complete his adjudication. The backline and stage setup will be the same as the heats: drums, bass amp, guitar amp, congas, bongos, KORG keys, and grand piano. Drummers can use their own cymbals if they wish; however, there will be the same drum setup as the heats.
General admission for the final is $10 (door sales only). Please encourage parents and school staff to attend and show their support.
As with the heats, it is a tight space on stage and within the front room of the RSA. We appreciate your understanding at making the space work and we thank the RSA for the continued support of the competition. Please use the downstairs space again for warming up prior to your performance.
Thanks to Mike Walker, Pete McGregor, Paul Crowther and the whole team from the Auckland Jazz and Blues Club, along with the RSA for their continued support.
Any questions, please ask, and I look forward to seeing you at the final.
