The Auckland Jazz Orchestra presents new works from the pen of pianist/arranger/composer Ben Gailer, alongside some old favourites from the depths of the band's repertoire that haven't been presented in a number of years.
A jazz pianist, and recent graduate of Auckland University, Ben Gailer's compositions are layered and symphonic, with dense harmonies and contrapuntal textures complimenting sweeping melodies and soaring improvised solos. His music is inspired by great contemporary jazz orchestra arrangers such as Gil Evans and Maria Schneider, while also incorporating elements of other genres such as classical, rock, and traditional folk music. Ben's unique musical voice as a jazz pianist is also intrinsic to the character of his music.
Ben and the AJO will head into the studio to record these works later in July. Be the first to hear them on this unmissable night!
Working with NZ composers and arrangers such as Ben is central to mission of the Auckland Jazz Orchestra, a full 17 piece contemporary jazz big band. Formed in 2009, the AJO draws from experienced professional musicians and exciting young talent, often working in collaboration with guest artists. This will be the band's fifth recording project, joining Darkly Dreaming, Bloom, East of the Sun with Caitlin Smith, and upcoming Inverted: The Music of Phil Broadhurst, soon to be released on Rattle Records.
