Neon Quaver will be returning to the Auckland Jazz and Blues Club in August the 23rd to be a part of your mid winter celebration and we look forward to seeing you all at the Point Chevalier RSA for a meal and live music.

Neon Quaver was formed in 1983 by David Lines and Richard Ghent, two boys from Levin. David has grown to become an Associate Professor of Music at Auckland University and Richard has evolved to be a senior leader at an Auckland secondary school. Both have been active musicians in various realms of session work, composition and live performance with many other National and local artists.

The Neon Quaver philosophy was to be appealing to the ear, compose original unique thematic material and explore improvisation. Neon Quaver’s first performance was in the famous Melba Restaurant in Auckland.

Richard Adams a firmly established New Zealand artist and Nairobi Trio founder, joined Neon Quaver in 1984, after sitting in on a session. Richard Ghent and Richard Adams met in Wellington when Ghent was playing in the Clarendon and 1860 with Cheek ta Cheek. Adams was playing jazz standards at the Travel Lodge which introduced the Jazz Standard influence that became a feature of the then Neon Quaver Trio.

Nigel Gavin the seven string master guitarist from New York joined in the mid 80’s and this extended the musical palette significantly, providing a strident virtuosity that complements David’s piano. Nigel founded Gitbox Rebellion and worked with a number of national and international acts like Rober Fripp of King Crimson fame and his Crafty League of Guitarists.

The repertoire is a mixture of contemporary songs like Aja, I hope I never and original compositions that all members have penned individually and collectively. All songs have the intrinsic melodic element with an interpretation using improvisation, to provide zest and flair, during performance. The audience will experience an exciting visual spectacle that is an artistic expression with virtuosic teamwork to excite the ear of any listener. The instrumentation of Piano and Electric Keyboard, Seven String semi-acoustic custom made guitar, Violin, Flute, Flugel Horn and Electronic Wind Instrument use subtle electronic enhancement. Neon Quaver provides an orchestral palette with four members.

Neon Quaver has performed at a number of venues in Auckland, ranging from the Gluepot, Three Lamps Corner Bar, Rick’s Cafe American, The Cotton Club and a number of National and International Jazz Festivals. We are delighted and thank the Auckland Jazz and Blues Club in partnership with the Point Chevalier RSA who have provided the more recent Auckland experiences of sharing the Quaver flavor with new and seasoned audience members.
