Kim Carr - vocals
Kim Carr is a Taranaki-based jazz singer who is quickly establishing herself as a 'singer with sass.'
Classically trained, she’s built up a diverse repertoire and vocal range - from foot stomping, swinging jazz standards to smooth, soft ballads.
Kim has been singing most of her life in a range of roles – from schoolteacher, in musicals and shows, and for friends' celebrations. She also had a taste of performing on the big stage at age 19 at the 1987 World Expo in Brisbane with her Hamilton Teachers College Jazz & Blues Band.
Her sporting career in netball, tennis and surf lifesaving - spanning more than 20 years – meant performing went on the back burner until three years ago. She embraced her lifelong love of singing with a move to Taranaki and became the resident jazz singer at the New Plymouth Novotel. Since then, Kim has collaborated with numerous local and international musicians. During an extended trip to Puerto Rico, she lived her dream singing with local musicians in colourful Caribbean bars.
A 'Candlelight Jazz' event she organised and performed at in New Plymouth’s Little Theatre last month was sold out. Among accolades, Craig Stevenson, CEO of New Plymouth District Council said: "If you wanted to experience a little bit of New York in New Plymouth then Kim Carr's 'Candlelight Jazz' was just the ticket.”
“Kim's striking vocals were beautifully supported and enhanced by her talented four piece band,” said another fan.
Kim may be new to the Auckland music scene, but she’s already had a hugely successful Auckland debut concert this year. At the Pah Homestead in April she joined forces with some of Auckland's finest jazz musicians, Ben Fernandez - Piano, Steve Sherriff -Saxophone, Nick Taylor- Bass and Hannah de Koster - Drums.
“I’m so excited to be getting together with these super-talented Auckland musicians again and take the audience on a 'Journey of Jazz,” Kim says.
